We have been working with the design team on the Memphis Union Mission (MUM) project for some time. Their campus vision and planning process, and renovation has been a great partnership amongst all stakeholders to envision a place where accomplishing the stated goals of MUM becomes second nature. The Mission has been serving the Memphis community for over 60 years caring for those without permanent housing, recovering from addiction, and others facing crises. Since opening its doors in 1945, MUM has grown in so many ways but has kept the same goals: helping clients become mature disciples of Jesus, achieve freedom from substance abuse, help reunite families and loved ones, and help the people reemerge as self-sufficient members of the community.

Over the last couple of years BPD has worked with the Pickering Firm to produce some incredible renovations to the existing Opportunity Center campus located at 383 Poplar Avenue. The incorporation of a new facility at this location is going to help the Mission serve more of the community here in Memphis more efficiently and effectively. Phase 1 construction was completed last year. It comprised approximately 62,000 square feet serving up to 450 overnight guests. This phase included interior programming including dorms, food service, clinic space and assembly areas. On the exterior, streetscape improvements as well as two courtyard spaces were added.

The first courtyard serves the long-term program guests and incorporates a variety of plantings, patios and outdoor seating options. The plantings will provide year-round interest and learning opportunities. The furniture is designed to accommodate various program activities while also offering spaces to congregate in large or small groups. The second courtyard is adjacent to the food service space and offers shaded seating and raised planters for guests to experiment and learn growing their own produce. The Mission plans to work this activity into their programs.

Phase 2 is currently under construction and includes additional dorms and the new primary worship space. Additional streetscape improvements are also part of Phase 2. Future phases will include a large interior courtyard space for all guests as well as additional clinic space, dorms, and ancillary uses. We encourage you to take a moment and learn more about MUM and it’s compassion and importance in our community.
